There is SO MUCH to be excited about in the new Black Panther trailer, but I have to tell you, by the end of it all I could think about was this interview with Michael B. Jordan from back in 2011:
AVC: Vince and Wallace and Alex [are] at heart good guys who just happen to come from difficult backgrounds. You never really play the badass. Is that something you’d like to do?

MJ: Playing a bad guy? Playing a bad guy would be fun, I’m not going to lie. I’d definitely do that in a heartbeat, because it’s so out of my nature.

I am THRILLED that he finally gets to do this.

I am also thrilled about basically everything else in the trailer, which looks amazing.

Gratitudes

Today's been tough, social-media-wise, so I am closing all of the tabs containing non-dw (realname) social media, and cultivating some gratitudes.

1. Kitten falling asleep on my lap at lunchtime, warm and purring and paws splayed in complete relaxation.

2. Takeout Chinese for lunch with [personal profile] sanj on the spur of the moment. With bonus kitten sitting on the chair at the head of the table, and periodically sticking his head up over the edge of the table to see if we would let him eat our chicken. (Which we wouldn't.)

3. The new mini-season of Voltron went live this past weekend! Kiddo and [personal profile] sanj and I watched half of it last night, and it's delightful.

4. Yesterday I roasted some delicata squash (seasoned with salt and pepper and curry powder) and then roasted the seeds (boiled briefly, then seasoned the same way.) It pleases me to have turned something I would ordinarily have thrown away into tasty snack food.

5. Dinner for tonight is already made, so when I get home from work around 5:30 I can mostly relax. There's work I need to do, but if I don't do it tonight, nothing will catch on fire.

How are y'all holding up? Be gentle with yourselves.

Yesterday, I scheduled my grocery delivery for the 8 am - 10 am slot, since I had plans for the afternoon, and so I set my alarm for 7:30 so I could at least have brushed my teeth and put on pants, but I hit snooze instead of getting up, and then the doorbell rang at 7:45. Needless to say, teeth were not brushed and pants were not acquired - I did pull on a pair of boxer shorts before I answered the door, but I was still half-asleep while the guy handed me my groceries.

I guess being early like that almost makes up for two weeks ago, when they didn't show up at all? Even though they said they delivered it to someone in the household? And I spent half an hour on the phone with Amazon assuring them that as the only person who lives in my household, I had not received any groceries. They refunded my money, of course, but it meant I had to actually go do grocery shopping. And then my baby spring greens froze (I think it was the packaging? because the bagged salad doesn't do that) and I had to buy lunch all week anyway, because ugh, salad that has frozen and then defrosted is all limp and slimy and I couldn't bear a week of lunches of it.

In better news, my plans yesterday were meeting up with [personal profile] tenaciousmetoo, her husband, and [personal profile] innie_darling to go see the 30th anniversary screening of The Princess Bride, which was, of course, fantastic. It opened with Ben Mankiewicz interviewing Rob Reiner, and Rob Reiner telling cute stories about the filming of the movie (and then there was a second brief interview segment bookending the movie).

The movie still holds up. It's still sweet and funny and romantic and funny, eminently quotable with iconic performances, sword fights, pirates, evil princes, and true love conquering all. Do I wish Buttercup were a little more active in the fire swamp? I do. But I am heartened by having seen Robin Wright as General Antiope in Wonder Woman, and the progression of yet another princess from my youth (I was 17 when TPB came out, so I can't say childhood) becoming a general. Anyway! It was great to see it on the big screen again, and I definitely recommend it.

Then we had dinner at the Grey Dog - the food was good but the music was loud - and talked for a couple of hours. All in all, a great way to spend a grey October afternoon.

And then the Giants actually won last night! A game where they were supposed to be annihilated! So that was fun. *g* But now I am very sleepy and wish I was home in bed instead of at my desk at work. Sigh.

So you know that thing I linked to last week regarding a judge in Michigan giving joint custody of the product of his rape to a convicted rapist? Well, there's now a petition for the state of Michigan to initiate proceedings to have Judge Ross removed from the bench. Yay!

A few days ago something truly historic happened. Calico Fiend was perched up on the top of the sofa, grazing away at her dinner. Young Miss Weaver jumped up on the seat of the couch, directly below her, either in hopes of pieces of dry food falling from CF's perch, or in hopes of CF losing interest in her food and wandering off. I was bracing myself for hissing and yowling, like every other time the two of them got within swiping distance. But nothing happened. CF ignored YMW in favour of her dinner, and after a few minutes YMW jumped down off the couch and wandered off. And then the exact same thing happened this morning.

I don't think they're buddy-buddy, exactly, but they definitely seem to be tolerating each other much better than when they were first introduced.

1. A good night's sleep, followed by Mexican breakfast and coffee and the Times on my laptop.

2. Making slow cooker chicken bouillabaisse again because it was so good last week.

3. A mellow Sunday of playdates (for the kiddo) and cooking and laundry (me), with the promise of [personal profile] sanj coming over later.

4. I am considering whether I can spring for Hugh Acheson's new slow cooker cookbook.

5. It is a spectacularly beautiful day. I am sitting on my mirpesset, listening to the wind chime, watching birds soar overhead.

How are y'all?

A time to pull away the football

So [personal profile] rachelmanija is trying to start a campaign to pull the nuclear football away from Trump's grip.

I Google, and found Charlie Brown's Greatest Misses: Every 'Peanuts' Football Gag Comic. Some of the panels seemed ... strangely apposite.

Free to take, use, modify, do what you will. Pull the football, save the world.

today i went to a housewarming/help-me-figure-out-where-to-hang-my-art party for [livejournal.com profile] lbmango, and i could not get over his kitchen. it's so new! and freshly-painted! and should have more counter space! but mostly everything looks so new and renovated and it's just really nice. the whole place is really nice. it's the second floor of a house and the top floor used to be part of the same apartment, which i figured because there's a stairway in the bedroom closet. (it's closed off after maybe seven steps.) and there's a sauna in the kitchen. O.O i think it used to be the pantry - it's about the size of a largeish closet - and i think it's just so cool that it exists. i got to meet some of his friends and offer opinions on where to hang art, and it was fun.

after that my sister and i saw marshall, with chadwick boseman and josh gad, and i enjoyed it a lot. chadwick boseman is a good-looking dude. that's not why i enjoyed it, but it always helps to have something nice to look at.

and in conclusion, have a poem.

There is the question
of bearing witness, of being yourself seen
by yourself, & seen clearly, cleanly,
without weapon or bible in hand;
as this was the wish,
the sturdy & not-so-secret wish
of those who named us—

our parents wanted us to be
known to ourselves without confusion:
without judgment,
sans suffering. Never force it,
they said, always find it.

OK, strictly speaking, that’s not entirely true.
My particular, sole, insistent, moody mother & father
probably never thought much about it at all.
Those two anxious citizens,
they were never exemplars of patience.
The weightlessness of detachment & acceptance
as I think of it now
would have frightened them—
for good reason.

If you could see these words
I’m speaking to you tonight printed on a page
as typeface & magnified x 500
you would feel just how ragged & coarse
they really are, heavy.

Well, playing the part of a butterfly
must be tiring, right?
I’m happier being the old ox, right?

On some plane of existence
these two scraps are all my news:
where the mess is
that’s where my heart is.

Posting from my phone.

My laptop turned itself off and will not get through Windows start-up in the three times I tried since. Of course this happens on the first day of Weiss vs Saiyuki Battle while I'm coding some of my submissions. I'm giving the laptop a rest for a while before trying again and hoping this isn't the death of my laptop, with some things I didn't save to a Zip drive yet because I was in the middle of working on them. (I'm still using my Windows XP machine due to money issues.) Of course this would happen on the first day of Battle. I've been dying for two weeks to post my stuff and now I can't.

Of course this is also happening at a time when I'm in major increased pain and neurological flare (weird sensations, numbness, some feelings of weakness). I'm really worried and really, really depressed, and I'm getting an MRI of my brain and brain stem to see if the back of my brain is slumping on my spine again and an MRA done of my carotid artery tonight.

Update 1:22 am: I tried starting the computer in Safe Mode but the process got a blue screen and turned off my laptop. It won't go all the way through Windows start-up in normal mode or "last okay configuration" mode either. Not good at all.

Update 4:30 pm: My computer will not start up.

I answered the first ten questions of this meme here, and now I'm doing the second set of 10:

Ship Questions for your Current Fandom

11. Who is your current OTP?
I guess if my "current" fandom is technically Star Wars, then Han/Leia is my current OTP. *hands* And also Rey/Finn and Obi-Wan/Satine and Kanan/Hera.

12. Who is your current OT3?
Rey/Finn/Poe. Anakin/Padme/Obi-Wan (which is more...how could these relationships be better/more healthy than fervent shipping; but they do work better as a trio. IJS).

13. Any NoTPs?
Didn't I already answer this last time? Reylo for Star Wars, definitely.

14. Go on, who are your BroTPs?
Han and Luke, I guess? Though I'm okay with Luke being there as part of the OT3 with Han and Leia. *hands*

15. Is there an obscure ship which you love?
Obi-Wan/Satine. Obi-Wan/Ventress. Also, Anakin/Ahsoka. I would also love some Ahsoka/Steela if people would write it.

16. Are there any popular ships in your fandom which you dislike?
Hux/Ren. Ugh. DO NOT WANT.

17. Who was your first OTP and are they still your favourite?
HAN/LEIA. OTP OF OTPS.

18. What ship have you written the most about?
I haven't really written much ship fic in Star Wars.

19. Is there a ship which you wished you could get behind, but you just don’t feel them?
Qui-Gon/Obi-Wan. I guess I can see why people ship them but I find them a huge yawn and have mostly been unable to sustain interest in reading fic about them where the romantic relationship is the focus. See also Finn/Poe, which doesn't interest me unless Rey is also present. I also just don't get any of the Obi-Wan/clones fic. I mean, knock yourselves out, but I don't get it.

20. Any ships which you surprised yourself by liking?
Obi-Wan/Anakin. Which - I don't read most of the fic for it, because I don't see it a regular romance? But I have a hard time with them being separated (before Anakin turns evil, I mean) even if they are technically involved with other people.
